Decorating Around Your TV

Updated: Jul 22, 2022

A large flat-screen TV above a modern media cabinet may be all that you need for a serene space in your family room, or wherever you watch TV in your home. I quite like the streamlined look too, and our family room TV wall looked great without any adornments. Then, I decided to try some framed art around the TV. Let's see which of the following two options you prefer!

Minimal Decor

With Framed Art

I created the art pieces using old greetings cards and scrapbooking paper. Then I framed them using custom frames from American Frame. The most important part of this 'wall of art' is the size of the frames and pictures relative to the size of your TV and cabinet below it. You also need to be quite accurate on measuring the space between the art pieces and the TV. I always try to visualize, on paper or using an app, how the finished project will look before I start creating new art pieces, or buying any frames. The art can be changed out from time to time, and I may opt for a few black and white photos in the future!

Of course, there are many more ideas on how to use decorative objects around a large TV. I looked at some great ideas on Pinterest and Houzz before deciding on the configuration for our family room. I also looked at online art companies such as Society 6 and Minted, both good sources for art prints at a reasonable price. Ultimately I chose American Frame for this project because I wanted larger and deeper frames that could accommodate my original art pieces that contain 3-D elements. You may be able to find similar frames from Target, Ikea, and Amazon.

Versatile Media Cabinet

The off-white media cabinet which I found at Wayfair a while back is really versatile. It comes with both glass and wood inserts for the doors! You can choose to display what is inside the cabinet by using the glass inserts or you can hide everything by using the wood inserts. Wayfair has a lot of great media cabinets at reasonable prices. Sometimes the exact item you want may be out of stock but it is worth the wait!

Floor Lamps

The floor lamps on either side of the media cabinet are from Target. What I like most about these lamps is the fact that the electrical cord comes out of the bottom of one of the tripod legs instead of trailing down from the middle of the lamp. Visible electrical or trailing wires are one of my many pet peeves (lol)! I also like the fact that they are light enough to pick up with one hand when running the vacuum around the room.
